The Chronicle

By fate or chance, Morgana and her sister were born into a world ravaged by conflict. The devastating Rune Wars had swept through most of Valoran and Shurima, threatening even the heights of Targon. Morgana's parents, Mihira and Kilam, were aware of the legends that spoke of the great mountain bestowing divine power. With no other option to save their tribe, they embarked on the long and perilous journey.

Even after discovering that Mihira was expecting a child, they pressed on. At last, where Runeterra meets the stars, Kilam stood in awe and dread as Mihira was chosen to embody the Aspect of Justice.

The couple returned not only with the salvation they had sought but also with twin daughters, Morgana and Kayle. However, the celestial power that had overtaken Mihira began to overshadow her mortal nature and affections. Often, she would hand the girls over to their father, abandoning them to heed the call of battle.

For months, Kilam was consumed by uncertainty. The wars raged on across countless fronts, and he watched helplessly as his beloved wife drifted further away. Fearing for his daughters' safety, he waited for Mihira to depart once more, and then fled Targon with both girls.

Their destination, though unnamed at the time, would eventually become known as a sanctuary from magic and persecution: the kingdom of Demacia.

In Demacia, the twins grew as different as night and day. Kayle devoted herself to studying the settlement's growing laws, while dark-haired Morgana became disturbed by the distrust shown toward newcomers. Understanding what it meant to be a refugee, she roamed the wilds, speaking with wandering mages and others who had been cast out for the dangers they might bring. At home, she felt her father's deep sorrow over leaving Mihira behind and became bitter toward her mother for causing such pain.

Morgana's fears that she and Kayle might bear remnants of the Aspect's power were confirmed when a massive blade, shrouded in shadow and starfire, descended from the heavens. As it struck the ground, the blade split in two, and feathered wings erupted from the girls' shoulders. Their father wept at the sight of them each grasping a half of the weapon and turned away, even as Morgana tried to comfort him.

While Kayle eagerly embraced their new destiny, rallying a group of judicators to enforce the laws, Morgana resented her newfound powers--until the night their settlement was attacked. Kilam found himself surrounded as the battle spread. In that moment, Morgana rushed to shield him, incinerating his attackers with dark flames. Together, the sisters saved countless lives and were celebrated as the Winged Protectors of Demacia.

However, Kayle's beliefs grew more extreme, and Morgana increasingly advocated for those seeking redemption. An uneasy accord was struck between the sisters and their mortal followers, but it didn't last. Kayle's most fervent disciple, Ronas, attempted to arrest Morgana herself. In an effort to protect her repentant followers, she bound him with dark flames, accidentally killing him.

As divine fire illuminated the city from above, Kayle vowed to bring Ronas' killer to justice, and Morgana met her sister in a fierce confrontation in the skies.

They clashed in the sky, their blades weaving arcs of blinding light and searing darkness that tore through the buildings below. It seemed inevitable that one would emerge victorious, but Morgana hesitated when she heard the anguished cry of their father. Kilam lay among the rubble, mortally wounded. Overcome with grief, Morgana hurled her half of their mother's sword at Kayle and plummeted to the ground like a falling star.

Cradling her dying father, she cursed their inheritance for the devastation around them. Kayle landed, stunned, as Morgana demanded to know if their father's crime--stealing them away from their mother--deserved the same judgment she reserved for the wicked. Kayle offered no reply, instead soaring into the heavens without a backward glance.

Morgana's wings became a constant reminder of her torment. She attempted to sever them from her flesh but found no blade capable of the task. In the end, she bound them with iron chains, choosing to walk among mortals instead.

Over the centuries, her story faded into legend, and the name Morgana was nearly forgotten. The people of Demacia now revere "the Winged Protector," remembering only the glory and righteousness of one sister, while Morgana's dark fury and belief in personal redemption became shrouded in the mysteries of "the Veiled One."

Despite everything, she continues to protect those who seek her aid. Bitter and betrayed, Morgana lingers in the shadows of the kingdom, certain that Kayle's light will one day return to Runeterra, bringing judgment to all.

As magic begins to rise once more, Morgana senses that a new dawn is approaching.

Over time, Morgana's legacy as one of Demacia's Winged Protectors faded into obscurity, and few remembered that there were ever two protectors. Instead, Morgana became known as the Veiled Lady or the Veiled One, a deity whom Demacians prayed to for the safe passage of their loved ones into the afterlife. Morgana roamed the realm, embracing mortals and dispensing justice where it was needed.

One day, a cleric and his pupil ventured into the woods seeking the Veiled One because the pupil had made a grave mistake. After hearing their story, Morgana punished the cleric for his sins by chaining him and forcing him to endure the same shame, suffering, and loneliness he had inflicted on his pupils. On another occasion, she rescued two girls from armed men, questioning and threatening the attackers about their village.

Morgana now resides in the Sacred Woods outside of Demacia, waiting for the day when she is once again needed.

For centuries, Morgana has tirelessly searched for her sister, documenting her findings in a journal. A Solari warrior once reported seeing a winged figure ascending the mountain peaks, while a wind mage claimed to have witnessed a bright flame spiraling through the sky. A Demacian noble was convinced the Winged Protector still lived and sent riders to track her down. After decades of searching, they found only a single white feather beneath Mount Targon. A young Lunari child, under the cover of night, claimed to have seen a winged ghost circling the mountain, though his mother dismissed it as a dream.

Many centuries later, Morgana heard a distant, lonely prayer. Though she couldn't pinpoint its origin, she was certain it was Kayle reaching out to her. However, those prayers remain unanswered.

One day, Morgana welcomed Nilah, bruised and bleeding from her battle with Volibear, into her sanctuary. Nilah and her crew sought refuge and healing, and Morgana provided them with both. They confided in her, sharing their stories and missions. However, their peace was abruptly shattered.

Outcast mages and followers of the Veiled Lady, who had escaped the Mageseekers, were being hunted. One of them was captured, and Klaus, a Mageseeker Inquisitor, ordered his men to take the Ruby-Eyed Conjurer and the others back to their ship and then up Mount Targon to pursue the rest.

Morgana acted swiftly, binding the oppressors with her dark shackles, forcing them to bear the weight of their sins. She saved the persecuted and led them safely to her sanctuary. Despite being struck by arrows, the Veiled Protector ensured the sanctuary seekers reached their destination unscathed. Morgana possibly saved an outcast mage named Lisa, who had lost her family, and is now raising her as her own.

During the Great Mage Rebellion in Demacia, the powerful mage Sylas sought out the Veiled Lady in the Sacred Woods, hoping to gain power and knowledge for his cause. Morgana agreed to test him in battle to determine if he was worthy. After their fight, she refused to grant him the knowledge he sought, recognizing that his heart was consumed by vengeance and hatred.

As Sylas journeyed to Morgana's refuge, he reflected on his failure to save Leilani and realized why he had failed her test. Rage and vengeance alone would not win the war. Humbled by his shortcomings, Sylas returned to Morgana, who, satisfied with his change of heart, granted him her blessing. She revealed to him the true origin of Demacia and the truth that she had once been one of the Winged Protectors alongside her sister, Kayle.

When Sylas asked why Morgana did not reveal herself, she explained that her return would also bring Kayle back, and Demacia was not yet ready for her sister's judgment. She then gave Sylas one of Kayle's feathers, using it to bestow upon him the ability to reveal the vision of Demacia's foundation.

Now, thanks to Sylas sharing the vision with the people, Demacia knows there were two Winged Protectors at the nation's founding.

Champion's relations

Morgana's complex relationships with those around her reveal the deep and often conflicting emotions she harbors, shaping her path in the world.

Kayle

Morgana and Kayle are twin sisters, with Kayle being the elder of the two. Their relationship became strained after the tragic event that led to their father's death. Morgana chooses not to return to Demacia, knowing that her return would inevitably bring Kayle back as well.

Mihira

Mihira is Morgana's mother. Morgana harbors deep resentment towards her, blaming Mihira for the pain and distress their father suffered after she became an Aspect. Despite this, Morgana still loves and misses her mother deep down, though she refuses to acknowledge these feelings, partly out of pride.

Aatrox

Morgana and Aatrox clashed roughly a millennium ago. Their battle ended with Aatrox being sealed within his blade.

Nilah

Morgana and Nilah met in the recent past. While Morgana could sense Nilah's pain, she found Nilah's unwavering joy to be both strange and intriguing.

Sylas

Sylas is aware of certain truths about the sisters and calls upon their power during the events of the Lux comics. Morgana aided Sylas in his fight against the Mageseekers by revealing her true identity and granting him her blessing.
