Malphite's Origin and the Monolith

Explore how Ne'Zuk's floating fortress fell to the Void, and how its last surviving shard became Malphite.

The Last Shard of a Living Fortress

Across Runeterra, there are stories of a colossal creature carved from stone. Miners in the deepest tunnels speak of a voice echoing through the darkness, a slow, distant humming that seems to come from the mountain itself.

Travellers claim to have seen an enormous silhouette moving beneath the peaks of Targon, each step sending tremors through the earth. Others insist that the same creature has wandered through the ravines surrounding Zaun, carrying centuries of dust and forgotten vegetation upon its back.

Some dismiss these tales as nothing more than frightened exaggerations. Mountains do not walk. Stone does not speak. And yet, Malphite does both. He is a towering being of living rock, with shoulders as broad as cliffs and jagged stone rising from his body like the peaks of a mountain range. His eyes burn with a strange green light, shining from beneath the heavy ridges of his ancient form.

But Malphite is not a mountain. He is not an elemental spirit born naturally from the earth. And despite what his appearance might suggest, he was never meant to exist alone. Malphite is all that remains of something far greater, a living fortress created thousands of years ago, during one of the darkest conflicts Runeterra has ever known. To understand Malphite, we must return to the ancient empire of Shurima.

Shurima and the Fall of Icathia

For more than two thousand years, Shurima dominated much of the known world. Its armies crossed deserts, jungles, and distant kingdoms, carrying the golden banner of the empire wherever they marched. At the height of its power, Shurima appeared invincible. Its cities were built upon wonders of magic and engineering. Its emperor commanded armies larger than those of entire nations. And at the head of those armies marched the Ascended, the immortal God-Warriors created through the power of the Sun Disc. Few could oppose them. Even fewer dared to try. Then came the fall of Icathia.

Desperate to free themselves from Shuriman rule, the people of Icathia unleashed a power they did not truly understand. They tore open a passage into a realm beyond the material world, believing the force waiting on the other side could destroy their oppressors. Instead, they invited something far more terrible into Runeterra. The Void. It did not conquer as mortal armies conquered. It had no interest in land, wealth, or glory. It consumed.

Its presence twisted flesh, shattered minds, and corrupted the very earth beneath it. From the ruins of Icathia came hordes of unnatural creatures, beings shaped by an endless hunger that could never be satisfied. The armies of Shurima fought back, but the Void was unlike any enemy they had faced before. Every confrontation seemed only to feed it. Every weapon revealed something new for it to understand, adapt to, and eventually overcome.

Ne'Zuk's Promise to Destroy the Void

Even the Ascended could not contain it completely. The corruption spread outward from Icathia, boiling through the land and creeping beneath the oceans. Its tendrils reached farther south, drawing ever closer to the hidden jungles of Ixtal. Among the Ixtali who fought for Shurima was an Ascended named Ne’Zuk. Ne’Zuk was an elemental mage of almost unimaginable power. He understood the forces of stone, air, fire, and metal in ways that few mortals ever could.

But his power was matched by his arrogance. Where others saw the Void as an incomprehensible threat, Ne’Zuk saw an opportunity to prove his superiority. He went before the emperor of Shurima and promised to create a weapon powerful enough not merely to stop the Void’s advance, but to carry the war directly into its territory. Ne’Zuk would return to Icathia. He would reach the place where the Void had first broken into Runeterra. And there, he would eradicate it at its source. It was an impossible promise. But Ne’Zuk believed himself capable of impossible things.

The Monolith: A City of Living Stone

For months, the greatest elemental mages labored under his direction. The task demanded more than mortal endurance, yet the work continued without rest. Stone was shaped and bound through ancient elemental magic. Vast structures were made to move as if they were alive. Powerful enchantments were buried deep within the creation, allowing the stone to repair itself and respond to those who commanded it. When the work was finally complete, Ne’Zuk revealed his masterpiece. The Monolith. It was not merely a fortress. It was a city suspended in the sky.

A colossal construction of living stone, the Monolith was maintained by the greatest elemental mages of Ixtal. Its ramparts were manned by Ascended warriors, while magical inhibitors crackled with enough power to hold the immense structure above the earth. Every piece of the Monolith was connected to the whole. Its living stone could shift, react, and repair itself when damaged. Though it possessed no identity of its own, something resembling life flowed through its enormous body. The fortress was built for a single purpose. Order. It existed to impose Ne’Zuk’s will upon the chaos of the Void. And so the Monolith began its journey toward Icathia.

The Battle Against the Void

The city-sized fortress glided over the Shuriman wastelands, casting a shadow large enough to swallow armies. Lightning erupted from its magical systems, striking the ground beneath it and fusing the desert sand into trails of glass. Within its walls waited some of the greatest warriors and elemental mages the empire could gather. At their head stood Ne’Zuk, certain that history would remember what he was about to accomplish. At last, the Monolith reached the ruins of Icathia. There, it faced the howling darkness of the abyss and the endless ranks of Voidborn creatures that had emerged from it.

The battle began. And it continued for weeks. It was a conflict unlike anything Runeterra had ever witnessed. The Monolith unleashed sorcery powerful enough to erase entire cities. Elemental storms tore across the wasteland. Stone, fire, and lightning crashed into waves of Voidborn monstrosities, destroying countless creatures with every attack. The Ascended descended from the fortress and carved their way through the enemy, their weapons shining like stars against the darkness. For a time, it might have appeared that Ne’Zuk had succeeded.

But the Void did not fight according to the laws of Runeterra. It answered the Monolith’s power with horrors of its own. Unnatural energies tore into the living fortress, gouging deep wounds across its surface. The Void’s touch corrupted the stone, leaving behind strange mineral scars that the Ixtali called malphite. Bad stone. The damaged sections blackened and twisted. The living material attempted to repair itself, pulling broken pieces together and reshaping its wounded structure. But every moment of battle brought new injuries. The Monolith had been designed to restore itself. It had been built to endure attacks that would destroy any ordinary fortress.

The Fall of the Monolith

It had not been built to endure the Void forever. Deep within its colossal structure, the strain began to spread. Supports fractured. Elemental bindings failed. The magic holding the fortress in the sky began to weaken. Still, Ne’Zuk refused to retreat. He rallied the remaining Ascended for one final charge. He had promised the emperor victory, and his pride would not allow him to return as anything other than the conqueror of the Void. But before that final attack could begin, the impossible happened. For one brief moment, the Monolith sagged in the air. Then it fell. A city of living stone came crashing down upon Icathia. The impact tore through the already ruined landscape. The Monolith cleaved into the bedrock, splitting the earth apart and exposing the abyss beneath it to the open sky. Entire sections of the fortress vanished into the darkness. Towers, ramparts, soldiers, and elemental mages were swallowed by the gaping wound. They disappeared into the silent nothingness beyond Runeterra, leaving no trace behind.

The rest of the Monolith shattered. Fragments of living stone were launched across the wasteland, falling like pieces of a broken mountain. The ruins scattered across a land already blackened by war. In a single moment, Ne’Zuk’s greatest triumph became his greatest failure. Of all the Ascended who had entered the battle within the Monolith, only Ne’Zuk survived. He dragged himself from the wreckage, choking upon the ashes of his own creation. Then he fled. Behind him lay the remains of the weapon that was supposed to save the empire.

The Surviving Shard Awakens

But the Monolith was not entirely dead. Its fragments still carried traces of the magic that had once connected them. Scattered across Icathia, the shards attempted to repair themselves. They reached for one another. They strained to rebuild the greater whole from which they had been torn. But they were too distant, and too badly damaged. The Void’s hunger continued to drain the magic from them. One by one, the fragments fell silent. Their movements weakened until they became little more than lifeless shapes clawing helplessly at the dust. Eventually, almost nothing remained. Almost.

Far beneath the surface, buried where even the creatures of the abyss could not find it, one fragment survived. For centuries, it lay alone in the darkness. The shard absorbed what little elemental power it could find. Slowly, impossibly, its damaged form began to heal. The Monolith had been created to preserve itself. It had been given the ability to respond, repair, and endure. Now, separated from the intelligence of its creators and the guidance of the greater structure, the shard began to change. Something awakened within it. At first, perhaps there was only sensation. The pressure of the earth surrounding it. The movement of stone. The distant trembling of a world continuing far above. Then came awareness.

The fragment remembered belonging to something immense. It remembered countless pieces connected through a single purpose. It remembered the movement of the great fortress and the elemental voices that once flowed through its halls. But those voices were gone. The shard reached outward, searching for the rest of itself. It found nothing. For the first time, it understood that it was alone. The surviving fragment pulled itself from the earth and took a new shape. Stone gathered around it, forming immense arms, powerful legs, and a body like a walking cliff.

Malphite's Search for Purpose

Malphite, a colossal being of living stone, erupting through shattered earth

From the corrupted scars that covered the fallen fortress, it took its name. Malphite. Yet Malphite was not the Monolith reborn. He was merely one piece of it. A solitary fragment carrying the instincts and faded memories of a being that had once been as large as a city. The Monolith had always known its purpose. Every stone within it had existed as part of a perfect structure. Every movement served the whole. Every part worked together to impose order upon chaos. But Malphite had awakened in a world that appeared to have no order at all.

Mortals changed their desires as quickly as rivers changed their course. They built kingdoms only to tear them down. They created laws, broke them, and then fought wars over the ruins. Their lives were brief, their emotions unpredictable. To Malphite, they were fluid creatures living in a fluid world. And he was stone. He endured. As centuries passed, Malphite wandered across Runeterra. Stories placed him in the caverns beneath Zaun and among the towering peaks of Targon. Some claimed to have watched him emerge from the earth during moments of great upheaval, only to disappear again when balance had been restored.

Others heard his voice deep underground. Sometimes it came as a roar powerful enough to shake entire cave systems. At other times, it was little more than a quiet hum. A fragment of living stone repeating the sounds of a vanished world, afraid that if he ever allowed himself to fall completely silent, he might forget the Monolith altogether. Malphite spent long periods sleeping beneath the earth. Years and even decades could pass like moments to a being such as him. But the chaos of mortals repeatedly disturbed his rest. War. Mining. Magic. The endless reshaping of the world above.

The Void Returns, and Stone Endures

Again and again, Malphite rose to restore some measure of balance. Yet each time the conflict ended, he was left with the same question. What purpose could be worthy of the last shard of the Monolith? He had been born from a weapon designed to fight the greatest threat Runeterra had ever faced. The will placed within the Monolith by Ne’Zuk had survived its destruction. Somewhere deep within Malphite’s living stone remained the need to resist chaos, to stand against anything that threatened the structure of the world itself. For thousands of years, that purpose had remained distant. But the Void had never truly disappeared. Beneath the ruins of Icathia, beyond the cracks in reality, its hunger endured. Now those cracks are beginning to widen.

The darkness that destroyed the Monolith is moving once again. Voidborn creatures emerge from forgotten places, and ancient powers stir beneath the earth. Malphite can feel them. Perhaps he has always felt them. The same corruption that scarred the Monolith and gave Malphite his name is awakening beneath Runeterra. And somewhere within the immense body of the last surviving shard, memories of that ancient battle are beginning to move. The city-sized fortress is gone. Its mages are dead. Its Ascended defenders have been swallowed by history. But one stone remains. And stone endures.
