Champion's story
As the youngest offspring of General Du Couteau, Cassiopeia entered the world with the promise of opportunity and privilege within the esteemed Noxian noble houses. Early on, her sharp intellect and wit set her apart, and while her sister Katarina thrived under their father's guidance, Cassiopeia found inspiration in the footsteps of their mother, Soreana.
During Noxus' expansion into Shurima, General Du Couteau summoned his family to join him, settling them near the governor of the coastal city of Urzeris. Amidst strangers in an unfamiliar land, Cassiopeia remained closely connected to her mother, absorbing lessons in politics, diplomacy, and the subtle art of influence. Yet, within Soreana's teachings, Cassiopeia couldn't help but discern concealed concerns that extended beyond the empire's interests.
Unexpectedly, a dire event unfolded as Soreana collapsed in their family residence, brought to the brink of death by the caustic venoms lacing her hairbrush. Recognizing the hand of an unknown assassin, General Du Couteau, well-versed in the ways of his trade, removed all household staff, leaving his wife and daughters isolated in an empty house. In the shadow of this crisis, still a mere child, Cassiopeia devoted herself to her mother's bedside, forging an unbreakable bond during Soreana's lengthy recovery.
As the general answered the call to return to Noxus, preparing for the impending invasion of Ionia, Katarina accompanied him, while Cassiopeia remained in Urzeris. In a moment of apparent relief, Soreana revealed a clandestine truth to her daughter--their affiliation with a secretive cabal known as "the Black Rose." This enigmatic group, guiding the empire for centuries, had finally extended its influence into Shurima. The revelation marked a profound turning point in Cassiopeia's journey, intertwining her fate with the covert machinations of "the Black Rose."
Released from her husband's vigilant gaze, Soreana embarked on her true calling.
Under her mother's careful guidance, Cassiopeia matured into a woman of unparalleled beauty, coupled with a formidable blend of cunning and intelligence, albeit with a noticeable deficit in empathy. Her perspective on those around her transformed, viewing them as mere instruments to be wielded for the realization of her objectives, easily discarded once their purpose was served.
Despite her nascent womanhood, Cassiopeia was swiftly initiated into the clandestine ranks of the Black Rose, tasked with tracking down and eliminating those who had conspired against her mother. Surpassing even Soreana's expectations, she executed her assignments with remarkable speed and efficiency, leaving no trace of her activities or the proxies she employed. It was only after this initiation that Cassiopeia gained insight into the broader machinations of the cabal within Shurima.
Leveraging her family's considerable resources, Cassiopeia conducted numerous expeditions into the deep desert, plundering ancient ruins with the aid of a local mercenary named Sivir. Her endeavors gained urgency with the unsettling news from the capital--Grand General Boram Darkwill had been ousted by Jericho Swain, and several noble houses, including Du Couteau, had pledged allegiance to this coup.
Infuriated and repulsed by her husband's betrayal, and harboring fears for the safety of all Black Rose members, Soreana, in a desperate act, entrusted Cassiopeia with a critical mission. Dispatched to unearth the godlike power that had once secured Shurima's supremacy, Cassiopeia solemnly vowed to return with a weapon capable of facing the impending secret war, or not return at all. The stage was set for a journey that would shape Cassiopeia's destiny and the fate of Shurima itself.
Honoring her solemn oath would exact a profound and irreversible toll on Cassiopeia. Upon discovering the long-forgotten tomb of the mythical Ascended, she recognized it as the gateway to the coveted power she sought. Intent on erasing all witnesses from her expedition, Cassiopeia swiftly dispatched her guide, Sivir, with a fatal stroke of her blade. However, her quest took a sinister turn when an ancient stone tomb guardian emerged, sinking its fangs into her flesh.
Enveloped by the arcane toxins, Cassiopeia was carried back through the desert by her hired soldiers, agonizing screams accompanying the grotesque transformation overtaking her body. Secluding herself in the disused crypt of the Urzeris residence, she endured unspeakable agonies as her form contorted into something monstrous--a slithering creature lurking in the shadows, capable of spitting poison and crushing stone with ease.
Weeks of mourning her lost life ensued, marked by tears and anguished howls echoing within the crypt, until the day came when Cassiopeia could weep no more. Rising from the depths of despair, she resolved to confront and, perhaps, one day embrace her altered fate. Though the Ascension she envisioned remained elusive, Cassiopeia had tapped into the magic of long-forgotten Shuriman gods. With determination, she pledged to wield this newfound power in alignment with the Black Rose's schemes, just as she and her mother had strategized. Day by day, she felt the force growing within her, its nature evolving in ways she could only ponder. The path ahead was shrouded in uncertainty, even for Cassiopeia herself.
In the story "The Shedding of Skin" we find Cassiopeia reclined against the crenulated rooftop, surveying the labyrinthine alleys and bustling streets of Noxus below. Unperturbed by the night's chill, she adorned herself in a translucent silk shift, revealing the seamless transition at her hips where supple skin melded into the overlapping scales of sinuous snakeskin.
The aroma of roasting meat wafted to her hidden perch, but it couldn't mask the repugnant odor of a city teeming with thousands of people stacked upon one another. As noxious venom mingled with her saliva, she flexed her muscular tail, cracking stonework and showering crumbled fragments onto the streets below.
Rats scattered, street urchins darted around corners, hooded figures whispered in shadows, and soldiers stumbled in and out of taverns--none suspecting the predator lurking above in the darkness.
Cassiopeia, concealed by shadows, brushed a taloned hand against her scaly side. Nowadays, she emerged only under the cover of night. Once a potent figure in Noxus, her slightest whim commanded assassins, soldiers divulged their deepest secrets, and generals sought her counsel for patronage. She sighed, reminiscing about her lost influence since becoming this grotesque abomination in hiding.
Upon her return from Shurima, Cassiopeia had hidden in her family's crypt, fearing her transformation. Alone in the cold, dank vault for weeks, she grappled with disgust for her serpentine body and mourned the loss of her aristocratic life. Eventually, a growing desire to hunt overwhelmed her, leading her to venture into the city by night while her family slumbered.
Cassiopeia interrupted her reverie as a broad-shouldered soldier stumbled from a tavern, drink in hand--the man she had been waiting for. She trailed him from above, silently crossing fortress walls and archways until he entered an empty courtyard. Cassiopeia slithered onto an adjacent roof, her eyes glinting with predatory thrill.
Her figure cast a shadow across the soldier, who turned, defiant in his drunkenness. "I know you're there! Show yourself!" he demanded.
Cassiopeia's tail twitched in anticipation, her forked tongue tasting the air. She inhaled the sweet scent of his blood, then exhaled with satisfaction. "Fight me face to face!" he challenged. "I ain't gonna be stalked like some animal."
An angry hiss escaped Cassiopeia as she swiftly moved to the opposite side of the courtyard, remaining hidden in the shadows. "You consider yourself better than an animal, do you?" she taunted.
The man, trying to locate the source of her voice, asked, "How'd you get across so fast?" in a wavering tone betraying false bravado.
"Even beasts are nothing to your savagery," she retorted.
As the man edged away, searching for an escape, Cassiopeia relished the prospect of sinking her talons into his flesh. He unsheathed his sword, turning uncertainly, his threat directionless. "You don't want to cross me. I've gutted worse enemies than you."
"Not just enemies," Cassiopeia replied. "I've seen your handiwork. You're not the only one who creeps about in the dark."
She spat a bilious wad of venom as he turned toward her voice, the man howling in pain as coin-sized holes burned through his armor and into his skin. Enjoying the sear of burning leather and flesh, Cassiopeia listened to his desperate attempts to open bolted doors.
"Who are you? Why're you doing this?" the man demanded.
"I've been watching you," Cassiopeia stated. "I know what you are, what you do..."
"What I do is no business of yours."
"I know you're murdering children for drake meat. I hear it's quite lucrative."
The man unsuccessfully tried to pry open a shuttered window with his sword. "Then there's the three tavern wenches--Sarmela, Elmin, and Lyx. They were found in the river yesterday. Their faces were hardly recognizable once you'd finished with them."
Anticipating the satisfaction of sinking her talons into him, Cassiopeia reveled in his struggles. The man readied his stance. "You can't fight me from the shadows. Show yourself!"
"Very well," Cassiopeia conceded.
Descending to the courtyard, she rose to her full height, the man's eyes widening in horror as she stood head and shoulders above him. "Monster!" he cried.
"Monster," Cassiopeia echoed. "Not the worst I've been called."
Slithering left, she whipped her tail across his legs, effortlessly knocking him to the ground. Coiling her tail around his chest, she tightened her grip on his ribcage, sensing his pounding heart beneath her grasp. Despite the urge to break him completely, she released her grip, allowing him to crawl to his sword in desperation.
Circling him slowly, she relished the sight of him trembling. Meeting her gaze, he stared in slow recognition. "I know your face. The Lady Cassiopeia! Look at you!"
Pointing to the ground, he pushed himself onto his feet with his sword. "You chase drunkards like me through the filthy gutters of this city now, is that it?" he spat a wad of blood. "From such great heights we fall, eh?"
Hissing with dripping yellow fangs exposed, Cassiopeia's gaze bore into the man's eyes, and she screamed, channeling her rage, fury, and resentment into a mind-shredding wail. As she screamed, her fury transformed into joy, and she felt like she was floating, her potential for greatness infinite. Searing emerald light blazed from Cassiopeia's eyes, and the man petrified from the inside out, his last cry stifled as her curse transformed his flesh to stone.
Slithering up to the statue, she caressed its hard cheek. What was once skin now fractured into a grisly pattern resembling a dried riverbed. "Once, I had to manipulate, bribe, or otherwise persuade people to orchestrate my schemes," she said. "But now... now I simply take what I want."
Whipping her tail forward, she smashed the statue, smiling as it shattered into a thousand pieces of dust and rubble. Cassiopeia, flushed with pride, considered her handiwork. Though her life as a noble had ended, the boundless power coursing through her veins filled her with unprecedented satisfaction. Slithering back onto the rooftops, her mind teeming with ideas, Cassiopeia eagerly anticipated her next victim--a challenge far greater than any before.
Champion's relations
So, Cassiopeia is some sort of an Ascended, or an approximation of it, let's now see her relations with other known characters. Cassiopeia, Katarina's younger sister, belongs to the Noxian noble house Du Couteau, now in disarray after the presumed death of General Marcus, their esteemed assassin head. Initiated into the Black Rose by her mother Soreana, Cassiopeia undertakes a mission to acquire godlike powers crucial to Shurima's ancient supremacy, aiming to thwart Swain's Trifarix, despite her family's allegiance to Swain, seen as betrayal by Cassiopeia and her mother. Cassiopeia, discreet about her affiliation, hires Sivir to raid Shuriman ruins, later betraying and stealing from her to unlock an ancient tomb, inadvertently releasing Renekton and Xerath.
