Katarina

Opening

In the tapestry of Noxian history, Katarina, the eldest daughter of the legendary General Du Couteau, stands as a formidable figure. Swift and decisive, she leaves her mark on the annals of combat with a fiery ambition that drives her to pursue heavily-guarded secrets, even at the risk of endangering those closest to her.

Champion's story

Born into one of Noxus's esteemed noble families, Katarina Du Couteau's early life set her on a path above her peers. While her sister Cassiopeia embraced their politically brilliant mother's influence, Katarina was molded by her father, the astute General Du Couteau. He, a strict and demanding mentor, urged her to master the blade, emphasizing precision over reckless brutality. General Du Couteau, notorious for being a difficult teacher to impress, instilled in Katarina a relentless pursuit of perfection.

Katarina scene

Her formative years lacked the comfort of kindness, as every waking moment became a relentless quest to forge herself into the ultimate weapon. She tested her endurance, dexterity, and pain tolerance. To understand the nuances of poisons, she pilfered concoctions from the city's shadiest apothecaries, incrementally building resistance while documenting effects. Scaling towering structures under the cover of night became routine, her movements unseen by prying eyes.

Driven by a fervent desire to contribute to Noxus, Katarina yearned for an opportunity to showcase her hidden strengths in service of the empire and its throne.

The turning point arrived when her father assigned her a target, a lowly line officer named Demetrius in an opposing army's camp. Displeased with the perceived waste of her talents, Katarina took matters into her own hands. Instead of her assigned mark, she assassinated the enemy commander in a flawless execution, hoping to bring swift victory and glory to Noxus.

However, her actions sparked unforeseen consequences. Demetrius, fueled by vengeful determination, led a berserk charge that resulted in the slaughter of Noxian soldiers, including General Du Couteau's personal retinue. Her father barely escaped with his life but was too furious to even meet Katarina's gaze. She had shamed their family name.

Overwhelmed by guilt and her father's disappointment, Katarina set out alone into the wilderness, contemplating her foolishness. But her solitude was shattered when another of her father's protgs, sent to avenge her failure, attacked her. Despite a deep gash over her left eye, Katarina, driven by years of rigorous training, swiftly dispatched her assailant.

Six hours later, she presented Demetrius's severed head to her father, admitting her failure and acknowledging the consequences of her arrogance. Though she considered taking her father's head, she ultimately recognized his decision to order her death as the right one. She had failed, not just as an assassin or a daughter, but as a Noxian.

Accepting the price paid for her arrogance, Katarina vowed to redeem herself, understanding that she had lost her father's favor. She knew he would raise others in her stead, but she remained resolute--determined to rededicate her talents to the empire and become the sinister weapon she had always aspired to be, regardless of the cost.

In the story "Message on a Blade's Edge" we find Katarina in the dim-lit halls of Noxus, where the rhythmic echo of hurried footsteps reverberates off the cold stone floors. A sudden shout pierces the air, signaling that someone has caught sight of the intruder. Swiftly, doors flash by as Katarina, the elusive assassin, sprints down the wide hall, her way out of the barracks seemingly blocked as an entire patrol skids into view. The odds are stacking against her.

With a fluid motion, Katarina shifts direction, racing back the way she came, only to be met by more soldiers converging on her position. Her fingertips itch with the anticipation of combat, but the numbers are overwhelming. Quick reflexes guide her through a door, which she slams shut behind her, dropping a wooden bar to secure her temporary sanctuary.

A familiar voice echoes in Katarina's mind, a guiding presence born from years of training. "An assassin's blades are but one of her weapons. Know your mark. Know the killing ground. Anything can be a tool to secure the kill." Katarina moves through the room, a trophy chamber, fortified and filled with shadows. Her father's teachings resonate in her mind.

As armor thuds against the oak door, Katarina contemplates her next move. A massive axe splinters the wood, and soldiers storm through the broken door. These soldiers, bearing the sigil of a house in rebellion, display arrogance in their symbols. Katarina draws her blades, ready for the confrontation. The soldiers take formation - six in front, seven behind - a daunting opposition. The voice in her mind urges quick thinking and planning before engaging.

A blade is sent flying, glancing off a chandelier, which crashes down onto the soldiers behind, creating chaos. Seizing the opportunity, Katarina swiftly dispatches an enemy and exploits the ensuing confusion. In the darkness, her blades dance with lethal precision, and Katarina becomes an unseen force.

As the skirmish unfolds, Katarina uses every tool at her disposal, inverting the grip on daggers, executing acrobatic moves, and exploiting shadows. The soldiers, now uncertain and disoriented, struggle against her silent onslaught. Witnessing the chaos, the arrogance of the rebellious soldiers becomes their downfall.

Adapting where others falter, Katarina disappears from sight, leaving the soldiers bewildered. In the darkness, she reappears, eliminating more threats with deadly precision. Witnessing the scene, the soldiers are caught in fear, uncertainty, and a sense of impending doom.

The room becomes a battleground, and Katarina faces the remaining soldiers. Inverting the grip on daggers once more, she engages in a swift, deadly dance, leaving injured adversaries in her wake. Blood is drawn, cries fill the air, and the atmosphere becomes charged with tension.

Amidst the chaos, a commanding figure enters - the mark. Flanked by personal guards, she exudes confidence, but her taunts are abruptly silenced as reinforcements arrive. Katarina realizes the mark's underestimation of the necessary numbers to trap her.

Caution is advised, but Katarina has her own plans. A blade is thrown skyward, predicting crossbow bolts, and chaos ensues as she retrieves the falling blade, leaving a dagger in an enemy's chest. Facing the mark, Katarina severs her head with a swift, decisive strike.

The severed head meets the ground, a gruesome message to the remaining soldiers, "Grand General Swain sends his greetings." Shockwaves ripple through the ranks, and fear takes hold. Katarina revels in the chaos, acknowledging that she has become more than a mere instrument of death. In the midst of the turmoil, a soldier charges, and Katarina, undeterred, raises her blades. After all, she doesn't mind the killing.

So, we see that Katarina serves Swain. Because four years post the coup against Emperor Boram Darkwill, Marcus, Katarina's father, mysteriously vanished, and the family presumed him dead. Despite this loss, Katarina, a staunch supporter of the new regime, ensured her skills were recognized by Swain, the new power in Noxus. Ascending to the esteemed position of one of Swain's top assassins, she diligently executed tasks like eliminating political rivals, dismantling rogue warbands, and silencing remnants of Darkwill's loyalists. Katarina, driven by a vision of a brighter Noxian future devoid of tyranny and prejudice, believed in paving the way for change.

In a surprising turn of events, Katarina found herself abruptly taken to a secluded location. The assailant, none other than her supposedly deceased father, Marcus, revealed the truth. He had faked his death under Swain's orders and shared details of his undercover work in Demacia. However, the plan had taken a dark turn, and Katarina was now tasked with the covert assassination of King Jarvan III and Luxanna Crownguard during the chaos of Sylas' Mage Rebellion. Marcus, distrusting Swain, warned Katarina of a betrayal, claiming that the Grand General had manipulated them for personal gain.

Despite this revelation, Katarina, driven by the prospect of undeniable merit against potential persecution, decided to proceed with the mission. When facing Lux, she chose empathy over violence, understanding the lady's rebellion against her family and the Demacian regime. However, Jarvan III, deemed a tyrant and traitor, met his end at Katarina's hands. Skillfully evading detection by Demacian guards, she successfully framed Sylas for the assassination.

As Katarina attempted to escape Demacia amidst the chaos of riots, she crossed paths with Garen, who suspected her involvement with Sylas. A brief but intense confrontation was cut short by an explosion, signaling the beginning of the uprising. Realizing the necessity to part ways, Katarina refocused on her escape.

Capitalizing on the guards' distraction, Katarina hijacked a raptor rider to breach the city walls. However, her escape was thwarted by a rogue arrow, ending the rider's life and sending Katarina plummeting into the forest below. The revelation unfolded that Captain Jaredan, part of the undercover assassination, had secret orders to sabotage Katarina's getaway.

After miraculously surviving the fall, Katarina found herself nursing her injuries back at the Noxian hideout with the help of her friend, Drann. The shattered dagger served as a stark reminder of the perilous situation she had narrowly escaped. Outside, Jaredan lingered, and Katarina began to question the circumstances surrounding her supposed assassination. It dawned on her that the assailant had intimate knowledge of her family's secrets, making her father the prime suspect. With Marcus still at large, she resolved to confront the only person who could hold such information.

In an unexpected twist, Katarina woke her brother from his slumber, only to detect the faint scent of her father's perfume, eroding her trust. Swiftly, she moved to subdue him, revealing Talon's involvement in a convoluted plan to fake Marcus' death and use Katarina as a pawn in toppling Swain. In a tense confrontation, Katarina managed to inflict a wound on Talon's eye with her broken dagger, opting to spare him. As she departed, she expressed no lingering grudge but warned him to forge his own path away from their father's legacy, vowing to kill him if he chose otherwise.

The following morning, Katarina and Drann engaged in a blood-bonding ritual, connecting her to new blades that would enable teleportation between her and the weapons. With the intention of shielding Swain from her father's machinations, she set course for the Immortal Bastion. Upon their meeting, Marcus disclosed his role in sabotaging Katarina's mission in Demacia and unveiled the true target of Swain's orders - himself.

A climactic battle ensued, shrouded in smoke and enduring for a challenging duration. In a desperate bid to complete his mission, Marcus primed a devastating Wolf's Maw explosive. Acting swiftly, Katarina threw her dagger, intending to teleport to it and disarm the device. Unexpectedly, Swain intervened, redirecting the blast towards Marcus, incinerating him instantly. In the aftermath, Swain congratulated Katarina, revealing that the entire assignment was a test to identify his failsafe - the one person capable of killing him if his demon took control. Fully embracing her role as Swain's assassin, Katarina eliminated Jaredan two months later in Northern Freljord.

Champion's relations

Of course it's clear to see that Katarina is a very complex character, and some of her relations with other characters are also very weird and unexpected like the one with her father Marcus Du Couteau. He ordered her death, believing she failed as an assassin, but Katarina vowed to redeem herself. Their final confrontation resulted in Marcus's demise.

Katarina and her younger sister, Cassiopeia, have limited interaction due to their different paths.

Katarina has minimal interaction with her mother, Soreana, who focused on her sister Cassiopeia.

Katarina and Garen clash during Sylas' Mage Rebellion. Despite initial hostility, they find common ground over their siblings and part ways with a newfound understanding.

Assigned to assassinate Lux, Katarina spares her, recognizing a shared struggle against family rejection. Katarina believes Lux could be a valuable asset to Noxus.

Initially aligned with Swain, Katarina becomes one of his trusted assassins. Despite a moment of mistrust, Swain's intervention during a critical battle cements Katarina's role as his failsafe.

A close friend and ally, Drann, the teahouse proprietor, provides Katarina with guidance, blood magic bonding, and a source of solace in her tumultuous life.
