Aurelion Sol

Aurelion Sol once roamed the endless void, shaping the cosmos with wonders born of his own will. From his claws flowed stars and galaxies, crafted in quiet majesty. Now, bound by deception, Aurelion Sol is compelled to unleash that same cosmic power in service to a space-faring empire that claimed his freedom through trickery. Longing to return to the art of star-forging, he stands ready to tear the heavens themselves asunder, dragging stars from the sky if that is the price of his liberation.

Opening

Welcome, lore-lovers, to Liandrug. Here, we wander through forgotten myths, ancient powers, and the stories written among the stars. Today, we turn our gaze toward a being older than empires, a creator of suns, a dragon bound in chains of deceit. This is the tale of Aurelion Sol.

The Chronicle

Once, Aurelion Sol adorned the vast emptiness of the cosmos with celestial wonders shaped by his own will. Stars and radiant marvels flowed from him, born of pride and delight. That freedom is now lost. Deceived by a space-faring empire, he is bound to wield his immeasurable power in servitude, forced to obey those who claimed dominion over him through trickery. Yet his desire has not faded. He yearns to return to the quiet majesty of star-forging, and if freedom demands it, he will tear the stars themselves from the sky.

Across the ages, the passing of a comet has been taken as an omen of upheaval. Beneath such blazing signs, empires are said to rise, civilizations to crumble, and even the heavens to falter. These beliefs hint at a deeper truth, stranger than legend suggests, that the comet's burning light conceals a cosmic being of unfathomable power.

The entity now known as Aurelion Sol was ancient long before the first fragments of starlight gathered into worlds. Born with the first breath of creation, he drifted through the endless void, seeking to fill an immeasurable canvas with wonders of light and color. Each star he shaped was a source of joy, each galaxy a testament to his boundless craft.

A celestial dragon is a rarity beyond measure, and Aurelion Sol seldom encountered anything resembling an equal. As life spread across the universe, countless primitive eyes turned skyward, gazing upon his creations in awe. Their wonder pleased him. He watched their young civilizations grow, amused by the philosophies they forged, beliefs that placed themselves at the center of the cosmos, all while marveling at stars born from his claws.

Seeking a deeper bond with one of the rare peoples he judged worthy, the cosmic dragon turned his gaze toward the most ambitious of mortal races. They were seekers of knowledge, already reaching beyond their home world in their quest to understand the universe. Of the day the Star Forger descended among them, many verses were written. Above a small world, the skies ignited as a storm of stars gathered and twisted, shaping itself into a vast form both wondrous and fearsome. Cosmic light coursed through his body, stars kindled at his passing, and constellations shifted at a mere gesture of his will.

Struck by awe before such radiance, the Targonians named the dragon Aurelion Sol and offered him a gift in reverence, a magnificent crown set with star-gems. He placed it upon his brow without hesitation. Soon after, the call of creation drew him back into the fertile expanse of space. Yet the farther he traveled from that distant world, the more he felt a subtle tug at his essence, pulling him from his course and steering him elsewhere. Across the cosmic gulf, voices rang out, shouting, commanding. The gift he had accepted revealed its true nature. It had never been a gift at all.

Fury consumed him. He resisted the unseen commands, straining against the chains that bound his will, and struck back at those who claimed mastery over him. Each act of defiance carried a terrible cost. With every attack, one of his stars was extinguished, erased from the firmament forever. Thus bound, Aurelion Sol was yoked by potent magic, compelled to turn his immeasurable power solely toward Targon's ends.

He was sent to war against chitinous horrors that clawed at the fabric of reality. He clashed with cosmic beings he had known since the first dawn of creation. For countless ages, he fought Targon's battles, shattered all who threatened its rule, and aided in the rise of a vast empire written across the stars. To him, each command was an insult, each victory a misuse of what he was. He had brought light into existence itself, yet now he was forced to serve.

As centuries passed, the wonders he once shaped fell into neglect, fading from the heavens without his guiding hand. At last, he accepted that he would never again feel the warmth of a newborn star. Then, something shifted. The bond restraining him weakened. Voices from the crown faltered, overlapping, arguing, some falling into an ominous silence. A calamity beyond his sight had disrupted those who held him. They were divided. Distracted. And in that fracture, hope took root.

Drawn by the promise of freedom, Aurelion Sol returned to the world where his chains were first fastened, Runeterra. Here, the balance would tilt at last. Across the cosmos, civilizations would watch as he rose in defiance, and once more the stars would bear witness to his true might. Those who sought to steal the power of a cosmic dragon would learn what fate such ambition invites.

Beyond his war with chains and crowns, Aurelion Sol's existence is bound by countless threads that stretch across the celestial order.

Relations

Among the heavens, he is not alone. There are others like him, celestial dragons born of the same cosmic lineage. Beings such as Inviolus Vox, The Infinite Mindsplitter, and perhaps The Immortal Fire are counted among his so-called siblings, reflections of a shared, ancient nature rather than bonds of affection. From his own hand, he also shaped living patterns of the sky. Constellations such as The Charger, The Trickster, The Messenger, The Scourge, The Serpent, and The Great Beyond were forged as expressions of his will. Of them all, The Great Beyond stands foremost in his esteem, a creation he considers his greatest work, one he would gladly unleash first upon Mount Targon itself.

Aurelion Sol is keenly aware that he is not the sole power that walks the cosmic paths. Entities like Bard and Soraka exist beyond his domain, known to him as fellow inhabitants of the celestial order. His hatred, however, burns fiercest toward the people of Targon and the Aspects who dwell among them. They are the architects of his bondage, the ones who turned reverence into chains and crowned him with servitude.

That disdain extends to both the Solari and the Lunari, and thus to Leona and Diana. To Aurelion Sol, their division is meaningless. Moonlight, in his eyes, is nothing more than sunlight reflected, their rivalry a redundancy unworthy of cosmic significance. There is one exception among the Aspects. Zoe stands apart from the others. The two are well acquainted, and she alone appears willing to shield him, at times, from the wrath of her kind. Yet even this tenuous connection tests his patience. Her childish demeanor and habit of treating him as a playful pet clash sharply with his ancient pride, leaving their relationship balanced uneasily between reluctant tolerance and simmering irritation.
